Ultrasound. No heartbeat. Miscarriage.

Let's talk about miscarriages and the dilation and curettage procedures (D&C). If you have had a miscarriage, you can relate and know its devastation and the scars they leave on you. We were not immune to this, and we definitely were not prepared for the news. We went into the clinic for an ultrasound, so excited and we recall thinking/discussing at what point do we think we should/could start sharing with people that we were PREGNANT! However, that doctor's visit didn't go to plan. We went into the clinic and the ultrasound began, followed by a long long long period of silence from the doctor. We started looking at each other with concern, but said nothing. After some time, the doctor reveals that there is no heartbeat, but that we shouldn't panic as this happens sometimes and it could just be an issue with the imaging...and he said to come back in two more weeks.

We maintained optimism over that very long two weeks, although we both knew what we were going to be told. We went back and the doctor informed us that we have had a miscarriage and they don't know why (as is often the case).

dilation and curettage. D&C. Miscarriage

We mourned and tried to move on, except there was one problem, the fetus wasn't naturally leaving the body. The doctor regularly told us that it's ok, it takes time, it will...it will. But, it didn't. Finally, after 3 months of trying to mourn and move on from the miscarriage, but can’t because you still feel pregnant from all the hormones still active from carrying around a dead fetus (your body thinks it is pregnant), the D&C procedure was finally scheduled for a month later. So, after 4 agonising months, the D&C was conducted. It took some time to rebound from that experience, but we did, we needed to.
